Since I've had continuing problems I did the following: discontinued using my 2T WD External Drive (it was over 9 years old and I had replaced the USB cable recently, its had enough spins), downloaded Mojave MacOS 10.14.6 installer and created a boot drive on a USB stick, wiped my SSD drive and reinstalled the macOS. Reinstalled from my Time Machine back-up on my Thunderbolt drive and I'm back running. So far no problems other then some weirdness with my Mac Mail app. I also ran Apple Diagnostics and of course the app did not find any problems. If I get any more issues I'm not sure what I will do. I'm very hesitant to upgrade to Catalina. The only thing I miss is the notes, reminders, and Messages are no longer synced with my iPad and iPhone.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I've turned off both of those options for quite awhile. They were causing kernel panics before. Honestly when I was on High Sierra it was bullet proof and no problems. Moving to Mojave was a mistake and I've had different problems (Time Machine backups and the prevent sleep option was a major problem). I've avoided a complete wipe and reinstall, but I may have to do it.

No problems since fresh install of macOS Mojave. Since I did a fresh install I did the upgrade to Catalina 10.15.5 and have had no problems. I now have syncing running between Notes, Reminders, and Messages. That annoyance is now gone. TheMacBook Pro seems to be more responsive, especially with log off and on, restart and shutdowns.
