Configure Apple Maps ALWAYS North UP

How to I set the Apple Map app to to have “UP” to always be NORTH regardless of how the app is being used? My brain is wired to look at the screen just as one would a paper map, with NORTH up.

I cannot use a 2D map screen where the arrow is always pointing to the direction of travel, with the map info rotating around. A 3D view is also impossible for me to use.

I want the map to always be 2D with NORTH up when using turn by turn directions with or without audio on.

I am using CarPlay with an iPhone 8 (iOS 13.4.1) with a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE.

While it appears that you can keep it oriented North for map viewing, it does not allow for that when you are in turn by turn directions. I just tested Google Maps, and it has a setting while in directions to keep North up. You can use Google Maps in CarPlay. But if you are more of a fan of Apple Maps, use that feedback link to let them know you would like to see that feature.

It seems that Apple designers can't imagine why any driver would want spatial orientation while navigating, instead of blindly believing that your car is steering you in the correct direction. I also have complained to Apple and I also use Google Maps for navigation -- for this singular show-stopping reason. Please add your name to the list of Apple owners who demand this basic feature.

I don't see that as an option in Apple Maps. You may provide feedback to Apple at Product Feedback - Apple

Thanks again, Chris. I tried your suggestion to use I Google maps. It does allow always North up. I will submit a feature request For this to Apple.

I purchased the Corolla with CarPlay a few days ago. I’ve never used an iPhone for navigation. For 25+ years I have ONLY used a Garmin GPS for navigation (wish it was CarPlay capable!).
