Airplay downloaed contents from Apple TV+ app to apple tv with no internet

Hi,

Can we airplay (mirror) downloaded videos in the apple tv+ app of an iphone to a tv connected with apple tv 3rd gen with no internet? I intend to store and watch videos later at a place where there is no internet except the limited cellular data in my iphone.

The second attached question would be if the internet is really needed for the apple tv in this case, would that just be required for authorization with minimum data need (and can be done with my cellphone hotspot?)?

Complicated loop but still I need to know. I know Apple's digital HDMI adapter (expensive) can serve my purpose but as of today I am able to buy adapter and apple tv 3 at the same price.

iPhone XR

Peer-to-peer AirPlay requires that other network access is off; you would be kind-of setting up a mini network of just two devices. Which doesn’t go together with hotspot access. Peer-to-peer AirPlay could be useful for non-DRM content.

Non-Apple apps may require their own internet access, for their own reasons, which may or may not include authentication. YouTube without internet is … nothing? (I know, the YouTube app with Premium can download for offline use…)

Some apps do not support AirPlay, or block AirPlay. E.g. Netflix. So, you can’t stream that content locally.

Yes you can.

Note that there is an AirPlay setting* on Apple TV to use the cloud version of a purchase instead of the downloaded local version anyway. You should turn that off for this purpose.

(* on the Apple TV 4th generation or later at least; not sure about 3rd generation)

Starting the movie will ping the Apple servers for authentication, but that should be minimal data use.

The Apple TV will happily use your phone hotspot as a network connection. Verify with your mobile provider if they support such use and allow it. Keep an eye on bandwidth use, if you can monitor that. Any unfortunate misconfiguration might use up much of your data limit for this billing cycle.

Yes, I was writing the same what you said in your second reply. Apple TV 3 is on tvOS 7.5 and if you meant the feature " Use iTunes in the Cloud" then it was introduced in tvOS 6.0 as per the changelog Apple TV Software Update 6.0 under this link https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202157 as you confirmed as well. And also under changelog Apple TV Software Update 7.0, it also says "Peer-to-peer AirPlay: Your guests can AirPlay from their Mac or iOS device directly to your Apple TV (model A1469 or later) without connecting to your wireless network." which confirms the casting device need not to be on same network of the Apple TV. But the conclusion is, Apple TV needs internet to play the contents which are provided by Apple.

But for other non-apple apps like Youtube etc, Apple TV don't need internet, right?
