iPhone 4 with bumper and official Apple Dock

I don't seem to this subject anywhere - but it's one that is really annoying me.

I use the official Apple dock regularly everyday to keep the phone in view and synched as I'm a graphic designer. I also hate putting cases on things. So this 'fix' that Apple are offering becomes a problem for people like me who use a dock (and spent £25 getting one) as the iPhone 4 with a bumper case on - will not fit in it.

I spoke to Apple yesterday and they won't admit or deny it! I also spoke to two people on Apple Chat and the first cut me off and the second just kept copy and pasting this: "I do not have information confirming the iPhone will 100% fit snuggly into the iPhone 4 dock with the bumper on."

Anyone else think this is not acceptable - as in the 'fix' doesn't help me or others who use the dock frequently.

Can you expect apple to create the dock so that it fits with the bumper? What about other cases. Should they market a new dock for each new case that comes out on the market? I think not. The best they can do is create the dock to fit the raw iPhone. Now, it would be nice if they came up with a new insert for the universal dock that fits the iphone with the bumper.

LOL @ Silverfox "iPhone 4 this changes everything" it sure does if you have to constantly use a bumper to receive any kind of signal on your iPhone 4, Apple really need to address this problem across the board, Steve Jobs has made a big mistake and will need to dip into his contingency fund to rectify this mistake.

If your iPhone 4 doesnt dock with a bumper on it, and you receive a call while your iPhone is docked, are you expected to get your bumper back on in the middle of a call, meanwhile trying not to touch the screen incase you hang up, then trying not to touch the metal band/antenna incase the call drops.

This is a hardware problem that needs to be fixed with a software solution, it seems that trying to fix the hardware with hardware is only going to lead onto more problems with other hardware, and thus upset even more iPhone 4 consumers.

Bumpers seem to be a temporary fix to an ongoing problem that isnt just going to disappear after 3 million+ freebies are given out.

So much for Apple catching up with Microsoft's sales!!

If you are using the 3G Dock, this won't fit the i4 by the way. Only the 'Universal Apple Dock' with an i4 clip or the i4 dock fits.

Cases won't fit either docks. They have not since 2G began with cases.

The i4 does fit and work well with the Original iPhone dock (without bumper of course).
As for new bumper and new dock - I went to Apple Store and confirmed with them that you cannot use both together. I share your frustration, just doesn't make sense to me that the bumper is recommended and the dock is designed to not work with the bumper. A real catch-22.
Too bad there isn't at least an adaptor that comes with the bumper to enable the encased i4 to fit in i4 docks.

Couldn't have put it better myself pearceplus. A much needed quality reply, unlike the replies of borss and peproue seen just before yours.

I was trying to help you, tool. All Dianne did was cry about the design which is not getting changed. He offered you no solution. I think you need to return it because they aren't going to cater to Silverfox.

Here is the answer you have been looking for.

I think Apple should update their store to reflect the problem with docking your phone with the official Apple iPhone 4 dock if the recommended bumper is installed. Under "Important notes" it states that the dock is only compatible with iPhone 4. It should also state "that the dock will not work with a bumper installed".

@Glorfindeal - What isn't Apple's position? Dont't you believe that Apple are responsible for the issues that many of the 3 million people that have purchased a iPhone 4 are getting. Perhaps is Apple weren't so secretive about their products and they trialed them on the open market before releasing them, they might have picked up this mistake before.

There are a lot of people that have paid a great deal of money for a supposedly bespoke product and therefore shouldn't have to resort to putting covers on their phone due to a mistake that the designer/producer has made.

Glorfindeal, you are obviously an Apple jobsworth judging by the amount of posts you have made, and you would hate to compromise your position within the "team" by bad mouthing Apple, but you need a reality check when it comes to consumer rights. Apple need to be particularly careful in the products that they endorse in the future unless this problem is solved soon. Silverfox has got a perfectly valid arguement, hopefully Apple will soon have the perfect solution to this arguement.
