USA Flag appears in the menu bar! What is this about?

Using Safari 13.1 on Mojave OS 10.14.6

A ping sound that indicates that mail has arrived happened and an icon of a US flag appeared in the right side of the top most menu bar on the left of the date/time.

Checked mail and nothing unusual in the inbox; checked Safari history and nothing that I didn't recognize attending was there; closed Safari and on reopening it the icon of the American flag was not there.

Is this some kind of infiltration/spam? Are others experiencing it also?

The American flag in the Finder's menu extras location is the flag representing your current keyboard input language, whether that is U.S. or U.S. Extended. The Mail application has nothing to do with the flag icon appearing there.

If Mail Preferences : General : New messages sound is set, and your speaker is on, then new mail arrival will trigger the configured sound.
