MacBook Air keeps disconnecting from wifi

Lately, I have to restart my MacBook Air 10 - 12 times a day because that seems to be the only way to reconnect to our wifi. It seems to happen if there has been no activity for a few minutes. For instance, i can stay connected through an entire zoom call but if I take too long to read an email, it disconnects.

Hello dkdkdkj,

I understand your Mac is disconnecting from Wi-Fi randomly and then has trouble reconnecting. I know how important it can be to have a reliable Wi-Fi connection. I'm happy to help you get to the bottom of why it keeps disconnecting.

Wi-Fi issues like this can sometimes be related to your network. Have you tested out your Mac while connected to a different network to see if the same thing happened? Are other devices able to connect to your Wi-Fi network and stay connected without issue?

Try out these steps and test your Wi-Fi connection after each one:

  1. Make sure your software is up to date. If you're using a third-party Wi-Fi router, check with the manufacturer to confirm that it has the latest firmware installed. Use the following steps to update your Mac: How to update the software on your Mac.
  2. Verify that all Ethernet and other cables between your Wi-Fi router and modem are securely connected. Sometimes network issues can be caused by loose or disconnected cables. Also, make sure there is no damage to any of your cables.
  3. Verify you're using the recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.
  4. Check for Wi-Fi interference: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference.
  5. Power your modem and router off for a few seconds and then power them on again.
