Deleting and reinstalling app

After an update on a gaming app I play, I can’t open the app. The support for the game says to delete it and reinstall it. I have made purchases and progress on the game, which I don’t want to lose. Is there a way for me to make sure this doesn’t happen before trying what the game support suggests.
