2017 MacBook air: External Monitors

Work gave me a 2017 MacBook Air. Tried to use an LG UltraWide monitor via HDMI and Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI Adapter. The image on the LG is stretched out.

Are there additional settings I'm missing or is there a better monitor or one with VGA/DVI that I should use?

Thanks for this. The MacBook Air does support the higher resolutions (I followed

the steps above) - what I don’t have is the proper adapter (I think!). I have a Thunderbolt to HDMI - not a Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI. The Thunderbolt 2 adapter handles the higher resolutions. Just ordered one and think that will do the trick.

Cheers!
