On Music app on Mac laptop ( Catalina 10.15.4 ) I cannot copy music to my iPhone. Both the laptop and iPhone are on my account. The laptop can see the iPhone in Finder. Music sees the iPhone but I cannot play any songs on it and I cannot copy an uploaded song in Music to the iPhone.
Is this a feature ? I still have an older Mac laptop that I can use but that's not as convenient.

You would use Finder to transfer songs from your computer to the device. In Catalina you are no longer able to play the songs stored on a connected device as you could with iTunes.

yeah, i was coming to that conclusion. seriously limits the phone’s utility to me; no car music, no cycling music, no workout music.

You should still be able to transfer locally stored content to the device so you can play what you want from it when you're out and about. Since all the media should be on your computer the fact that you cannot play what is stored on the device through the Music app when connected to your computer shouldn't be a limitation.
