MacBook Pro keeps on freezing

He there,

I've got an 15” MacBook Pro from 2018 which runs the latest software.

But some days it keeps on freezing and I have no clue how this comes. I have the feeling it has to do with Google Drive File Stream, but I’m not really sure.

The fans are running sometimes, sometimes I hear them a bit lower.. But typically when it freezes the Clickpath is not working anymore first, and a second later I can’t use the mouse anymore.

It freezes for like 5 minutes and shuts down automatically, just before this it runs the fans at maximum speed for a split second.

Is anyone experiencing the same? After restarting it (sometimes) gives me a report form, which I included together with the specs of my Mac below.

Thanks in advance, Paul

Thanks to GÁBOR HARGITAI

When installing Google Drive File Stream for macOS for the first time, you should see Loading your files within the app – along with the sudden realisation that your fans spin up and something is running one core of your CPU at 100% load.

Aside from Google constantly fixing bugs and pushing updates to improve Google Drive File Stream, what did the trick for me was to disable Spotlight indexing for the Google Drive File Stream folder, namely adding it to the list of excluded apps. Here’s how:

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Go to Spotlight
  3. Select the Privacy tab
  4. Click on the plus ‘+’ sign
  5. Select the Google Drive File Stream folder
  6. Done!

Hi paulrosmalen,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today with your MacBook Pro that has been freezing and shutting down.

This article might be able to help: If your Mac restarted because of a problem.

One of the suggested steps in the article is using safe mode. If you want to see if a third party app like the Google Drive File Stream or something else is causing the issue, try booting up in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Have a fantastic weekend!
