I have a 2nd generation apple tv and some of my movies wont work in the apple TV app, but they will play if I use the old movies app instead. It gives me some kind of error about the movie not being available in the USA anymore. Any idea why it would work in one but not the other? I was considering upgrading my apple TV, but I don't want to if I won't be able to play all of my movies.

No worries. You can try signing out of your account and back in. Make sure it is up to date (firmware 7.5) Also, a reboot to the Apple TV. If it persists, then as suggested contact iTunes.
I verified that it is the 2nd generation before posting this. The first app on my home screen is apple TV, and the 2nd one is movies. I just thought it was strange because i haven't had problems playing my purchased content through the apple TV app before, and I haven't had to use the movies app since the other app appeared on my home screen a few months ago.
It would have to be the 3rd gen if it has the Apple TV icon, as that was the model that received the update to receive a server version of that app. The 2nd gen was long ago classified as obsolete and it's last firmware update was 6.2.1 (from 2014).
You're both right. It is 3rd. When I was looking at the page that compares the models I didn't realize how similar 2nd and 3rd look. Sorry about that.
