iPadOS external drives

When using an external drive for iPadOS does anyone know how to identify how much storage is available for that drive? I can see how much local storage is available on the iPad and how much iCloud storage is available on the bottom of the files app, but when I look for the available storage of an external drive, nothing shows. Any ideas?
