iPhone sync issue in Catalina 10.15.4

Similar to the issues faced by user here, I'm unable to connect iPhone 11 or 7 to the Mac Book Pro (on Catalina 10.15.4): https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250855445?answerId=251782455022#251782455022

The prompt "Trust this computer" appears for 3 seconds and disappears, and I never get to press it. So now, iPhone is unable to connect to computer on Catalina.

Solutions I've tried (but did not resolve problem):

restarting the computer
in Finder preferences CD, DVD, iOS devices are checked
trying out with different apple cables (all original cables)

Turn off the iPhone, connect it to the Mac and then power the iPhone up.
