Why is my macbook pro charger switching between on and off?

Out of the blue my charger/battery sign on the menu bar turned on and off alle the time, plus the sound of it charging. I tried putting the charger in and out of the computer etc but nothing is working. My battery is at 57% and I want to solve it so I can actually use my MacBook Pro, before it dies. Should I buy a new charger?

You do not say what exact Mac /model /year /size /retina /TouchBar is this...

Verify the Condition of the Battery would be the first step, from the BATT icon in the upper right menu bar, hold the Option key>

Anything but Condition :Normal needs to be serviced.

Older mac's like the mid 2012 are of an age you start to see problems with a wornout DC-inboard.

Luckily this is a replaceable component on the Logic board and maybe parts and labor ~$160 and then I would recommend a new charger to go with it.

Try an SMC reset.

Check the condition of the battery. Option-click the battery icon on the menubar. Any condition other than "Normal" or "Good" means the battery should be replaced.

Run the Apple Diagnostics.

If this is a USB-C laptop, then try using another USB-C port especially on the other side of the laptop if you have the Touchbar model. Also plug the charger directly into the laptop instead of any dongles, adapters, or hubs.

See these Apple articles for troubleshooting a Magsafe or USB-C charging issue.

Unplug the charger from the electrical outlet for a minute to reset the charger's internal circuitry. Also try using another electrical outlet.

If you still have problems then have your laptop checked out by Apple or an AASP or click on the "Contact Support" link at the top right of this page.
