How do I stop my FCP Library from renaming itself?

I'm new to FCP X. Every time I open my Library the name of the library changes in FCP X. ie it adds dates and timestamps to the name. I didn't catch this for a couple of days and now have 5 different names for

the same project. Even when I change the name back to what I want it to

be, it still creates another library folder. Shouldn't FCP just open and keep the same name? I can't find anything in the preferences that would help.

Questions; Why does the name change? How do I stop this from happening? Is this supposed to happen? Can I delete all the older Libraries and just keep the latest version without screwing

up the project? Is FCP supposed to create so many Libraries per session?

Thank you so much for you're help, hope this makes sense.

Yes I have a folder called Wedding X(and Wedding, Wedding x1, etc)

After all this back and forth and scouring the inter webs, I think(I think) I have a better grasp of what's going on. Opening the project by launching FCP from the dock automatically opens the correct Library, it's only when I launched the project thru the Library file itself that caused all the confusion. I still don't know why it generates random file names, but that's neither here nor there at the moment(I'll figure it out another time). The only sticky wicket is where my Library resides now. It's in the Movies folder on the imac. (which I thought was associated with only ** files?) How do I get it to save to an external drive? Or is it better to leave it on the imac and copy it over to the external drive every night as the **? Also, where are the render files stored?

The external drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

As near as I can tell, if you have two Libraries going with similar names they may be backing up to the same place.

When you change a Library name even by one character FCP X sees it a a NEW Library. Hence the mass of similar names.

Originally there would have been a NEW Library Created by using File>New>Library:

Can you find that one, probably called Wedding X with no date/time stamp?

BTW: How is this external drive formatted?

The whole thing is OVER complicated for a simple process.

You should direct your Backup files to the Movies folder on the System Drive.

Currently if you need a backup you loose everything as it's all on the external if the external fails.

Backups need to on another seperate location.

You can rename a Library backup then continue to use that as the Main Library.

BTW: Backups are auto generated by FCP X every 15 minutes while the app is being used and changes are actually made.

They accumulate with the date/time stamps so you can readily identify the latest one.

This on was create at 6:43pm May 9 2020 Pacific Daylight Time.

Q1. The Movies folder is the default location when you first install FCP X.

Your Library and stuff will work without issue from there, but, space can quickly run out.

That's why an external drive formatted to Mac OS Extended or APFS works better.

Q2. With FCP X open use File>New>Library, you then are directed to the various options connected to your Mac.

If you want it to go to an External Drive:

Q3. It's better to have your Library on an external as it allows your Mac system to just use FCP X.

Q4. Render files are stored in the Package Contents of the Library Bundle.

Right click a Library to reveal Show Package Contents:

All the files that FCP X uses and creates are in there by default.

Note: If you direct that files are stored outside of the Library Bundle, known as External Media, you will see SymLinks in the various folders. They look like real files with a curved arrow on them.

A SymLink is basically a Shortcut/Alias pointing to an original file at its remote location.

In the above image, it shows the default places where your stuff goes.

Media, Cache and Renders all go to the Library, known as Managed Media.

Backups go to your Mac Movies folder.

When you select Storage Locations>Modify then you can send these items wherever you want.

I think this has happened in your case and somewhere/somehow it got confusing??????

If you create a NEW Library and keep the stuff as Managed Media it is simple matter of copying the whole Library (use the Finder) to another drive as a full working BACKUP.

The time stamped backups in the Movies folder are very different to a full working backup.

The date/time backups are a database (small file of info, no media) of the Library.

If you lost your drive where the Media is stored then a date/time Backup is pretty much useless.

A backup knows where all the pieces are and what to do with them but if it cannot access the actual pieces then it can't do it's thing.

Hi Tom-

Thank you for the response. I have an external Seagate drive that I created a "Wedding X" folder that I'm saving to(or so I thought). This is what happens every time I open the Library from the Seagate drive. It creates a new folder with a different name. When I noticed I changed the name manually to "Wedding X 1" to see if that would help. Nope. Every time different name. I edited a project last year and don't remember this happening.

In the first image what I do not see anywhere is the original library. You have set a folder called New_Wedding_X to store the media, the cache, and the backups. Is that what the first image shows, the contents of New_Wedding_X? It looks like it's been changed a few times. What I don't see anywhere is the library called Wedding X 1. Where is that?

If the first image is inside New_Wedding_X, I don't see how you can have two folders called Wedding X 1 at the same level of a folder structure. It's really hard to figure out what you're done. Normally the backups, which a small database files, are stored in the a Final Cut Backups folder inside the Movie folder.

Most users simple launch the application and it launches the last library that was open. Or they double click the library to open it. The library is Wedding X 1. That's what should open. If you have already captured media, there should be a folder in New_Wedding_X with the event name. In there should be a folder called Original Media.

Yes. The first image shows what's inside New_Wedding_X. I thought the files with the purple squares was the Library files. They're all nested under the files that are created every time I open the Library(one of those purple squares). When I made a new Library it never made a 'Library Folder' on the Seagate drive, was it supposed to? Where else could it be?

The reason there are 2 folders called 'Wedding X 1' is because when I discovered FCP was creating these weird files and names, I manually changed within the project hoping it would then save to a single file called 'Wedding X 1'. It did not, it just keeps making new folders and files.

I am launching the application by double clicking the last library that was open. Once open it creates another folder with whatever name I give it. If I don't manually change the name it'll save with one of the big time stamped names, and then I get confused on where the heck I am. I'm sorry for all this confusion, I'm trying to explain the best i can. All my media is stored in another Folder on the Seagate. When I created the Library I clicked 'Keep media in Place'? and not to copy it over.

Basically: When I first opened FCP to edit my 14 year old Wedding I set the Library to New Wedding X on the Seagate. I did some stuff, closed out and when I relaunched(from the library that was created) it opened with a really long time stamped name(I didn't notice until the next day) that's when I started to try and re-name manually to Wedding X 1 hoping it would stick to that one folder. 4 days later and I keep ending up with different names and folders every time I launch the project. Now I'm here asking for advise. You've been a gentleman, thank you. I'm usually very good at trouble shooting these things, but this one's got me stumped. The attached pic is from today. You can see I renamed it Wedding X 1, same as Yesterday. That's the name I'm trying to stick with. I just keep dumping the previous days library into a folder called Old_Libraries so I don't get totally confused(pic 2).

100% agree Al, this is way over complicated. I'm just trying to understand the simple fact that every time I open the project, the Library name changes and why. I used FCP7 forever and never had an issue because the preferences were straight forward. X isn't so much. Just trying to figure it out and get it under control. Since it is such a mess I've been backing everything up on another drive every night just in case.

This is awesome, explains a lot. Thank you Al and Tom for all the work, I know it can be frustrating with such basic questions. Just know you make people on the other end very happy and a little bit smarter. Last question; I'm about 1/3 done with my project, if I know move my library to my external, do I now have to move the 'Old' Library also or does FCP have all the information (from the last 5 days) in every new Library created or moved? My mind says that every 15 minutes FCP backs up and stores all information from the start of the project. Is that correct?
