While using iMessage on iMac running Mojave 10.14.6, when I send or receive an image and double click or space bar the image to enlarge in in preview, the image that opens is not the image I selected. It will open another image from within the same text thread, but not the image I'm trying to view. Anyone?

This has been happening to me for quite a long while; even before I upgraded to Catalina (I'm now on 10.15.5). It does not happen in the same iMessage threads on iOS - it only happens on macOS.
Did you ever get it figured out?
Same here- no issues on iOS, only on macOS, and still happening...I submitted a bug report to Apple in May at the suggestion of the first reply.
I started a thread in the Catalina area if you want to follow that as well, just in case a solution ends up posted there.
