Audio over HDMI

Connected my Macbook via hdmi to my Yamaha receiver.

Connection shows up on Audio MIDI and I can set up 5.1 speaker layout and test tones can be heard from each speaker.

But in Preferences>Sound the device is noted as "This device has no output controls" and the channel and master volume sliders are greyed out and set to 0...so no sound outputs to the Yamaha.

If I connect the same device over Bluetooth or Airplay it works but this type of connection is limited to stereo.

Hello gordonepalmer,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. From your message I understand that you are having some difficulty using your Yamaha receiver with your MacBook when connected via HDMI.

You mentioned that you're able to set it up but that it is not showing any controls with the Output devices. To begin, I would reset the NVRAM. The NVRAM is nonvolatile random-access memory which is used to store certain settings and access them quickly. One of the settings is related to the sound volume. Follow the steps in this article to reset it: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

If the issue persists after you've reset the NVRAM, check out these steps: Set up an audio device on your Mac or stream music from your Mac. You'll want to be sure to check with Yamaha to find if there is any software or drivers which you'll need to install to use the receiver via the HDMI connection.

All the best.
