Brave Browser installed a new volume...

I installed the Brave Browser today, and just noticed that it has created a new volume in the root directory.

Double clicking on it shows be this:

Here is the info screen:

This is the first time I see an application create a separate volume for itself. The browser runs fine.

Can someone explain what this is and if it is normal?

All the other volumes in the 1st screenshot were created by me.

That’s the mounted disk image that was used to download the browser.

Once Brave.app has been copied over to Applications, eject the installer disk and (optionally) delete the DMG that was downloaded. To eject the disk, use Finder and select the mounted DMG and select File > Eject. (There are other ways.)

This is a typical DMG-based installer sequence, so you’ll also encounter this for other apps not downloaded from the Mac App Store.

This (circled in red) arrow is intended to encourage dragging the app to Applications, to install it:

Thank you very much. I have installed a few apps outside the AppStore, but never saw something like this (could be that I just did not notice). I had installed the Brave Browser by dragging that app into the Applications folder. Was the volume supposed to be ejected automatically once the installation was complete? But for some reason did not happen this time?

No, the volume is not ejected automatically when the drag is completed, nor is that expected.

These downloaded disk image (DMG) volumes can and variously do contain other content, such as app documentation.

This particular download does not appear to include that additional material.

The other common installation mechanism is a package. These are usually PKG files. Packages can run scripts, and can load files in “interesting” or unusual places. Sometimes in hard-to-remove places.

App bundles—such as this Brave.app app bundle—don’t typically scatter files around. Drag it to the trash to remove it, and it’s all gone.

As for what you did or did not notice before, you’re a better judge of that than I.
