Using bootable hard drives with different computers

So I have a bootable hard drive copy of my Macbook Pro which needs to get sent in for battery replacement. Can I boot from my hard drive on another Macbook pro so I have all my mail, docs and software while my laptop is in shop? Does it need to be identical to my current laptop? what would be the limitations of doing something like this?

Thanks!

It only needs to have a version of macOS installed that will boot the other computer.

Boot Using OPTION key

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Immediately, at or before the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
  3. Release the key when the Boot Manager screen appears.
  4. Select the disk icon from which you want to boot.
  5. Click on the arrow button under the drive icon.

Well, there are several possibilities. First, the installed system on the bootable drive is, in fact, not bootable. Second, the drive is not detected by the computer. Third, you did not depress the Option key fast enough after the restart. Fourth, the keyboard has a problem.

I don't have any way of knowing which of these is what happens. Tell me what the drive is, the enclosure, how it is connected, etc. How did you put macOS onto the drive and what version is macOS? What version of macOS is installed on the computer?
