I am forever having difficulties backing up my phone to my iCloud (free 5GB). I have deleted all existing backups, so my iCloud is empty. The only things that I am attempting to backup are contacts, calendar, and notes. Nothing else is set to backup to iCloud. Yet I’m being told that it will take over 5 gigs of space to backup those three things. There is no way that info would take 1 gig of space much less 5. Any advice?

Try restarting the phone
Your notes.... Do they have a lot of attachments? Etc. Do you have attachments in contacts?
Also, how much storage and how many apps do you have on your iPhone? How old is your phone as how many years do you have used it? This might create a lot of random data that might take a lot of space. Try to connect iPhone to a computer and see if there is a lot of data in the folder structure. Also if the phone has been in use for a long time, or it has an old backup loaded onto it, consider restoring it as a new iPhone.
You do have quite a lot of data. iCloud backs up also other stuff than what is in settings. I recommend you restore your phone to reduce backup size. Also one other way is to use a Mac or pc for backups, or just pay 2,99$ for 200gb if iCloud that you can share with your family.
If the current storage on the phone is 40.5 GB, it is quite likely there are apps being backed up with considerably more data than those you e posing on the screen shots. What, for example, is in your files app?
I have 4 notes that are text only. No attachments. This is an iPhone 8, got it 2 years ago.
on the phone itself, I’ve used 40.5 gigs out of 64.
when I check phone storage, my notes are only 20mb and contacts / calendar are even smaller.
What you are showing is not the apps to be backed up, but those that are synching content via iCloud. Tap the “Show all apps” at the bottom of the screen to se what is actually being backed up.
Yes I have looked at that. All apps listed are unchecked.
Done. No change in the “next backup size”
I don’t even have the files app on this phone. And when I look at all the apps listed under iCloud, everything is turned off other than contacts, calendar and notes.
