When I connect my iPad to my iMac via USB it does not show up in the Music app or the desktop. I've turned on and off both machines, tried different cables and ports, updated all software on both devices, etc. My iPhone connects just fine. When I run a system report the UBS shows the iPad connected but it does not show up in the Finder or Music app or anywhere else.

Thanks, i had tried that and it did not show up in the finder but then I realized I needed to hover over the Locations tab and press show. That brought it up and once I said yes to trust this computer it showed up in the Music app as well. Thanks

Don't use the music app to connect your iDevice.
To use:
Click on the Finder icon and select your iPad. Make sure to allow access from your iPad.
