blade tool cutting differently

Mid-project my blade tool began cutting differently. The bladed clips now collapse to the lowest level of the timeline instead of remaining attached, but cut. See video for what I mean.


Not sure if I accidentally altered some setting. I tried removing preferences and that didn't do anything. Anyone know how I can get it working normally again?

Everything is working as designed.

There are no tracks in FCP X.

The clip is high up because it has another clip between it and the primary storyline.

When you blade a part that has nothing below, it will "fall" down, as you are seeing.


If you want to prevent that, you can make the top clip into a secondary storyline (Command-G).

This will make all the bladed parts of that top clip stay together.
