CarPlay Audio Music Distortion / Crackling / Clipping

I solved this problem, but wanted to make a post as I saw many others had the same problem and no answer seemed to be posted:

I have a Sony Headunit with Apple CarPlay, and started noticing some distortion to the music, like static in the background or the speakers clipping. It was only really happening on my own songs, which are not found in Apple Music, and only via CarPlay; Audio via Bluetooth and normal FM is fine.

I tried searching for other posts with similar issues, but they were just on older iOS versions, and no new answers as of May 2020.

In the end I noticed another post suggesting it could be due to a custom EQ set on the iPhone Music settings. I did not have an EQ set, but I noticed that I did have "Sound Check" turned on. I turned this off and it the audio distortion stopped straight away.

Solution: try turning off Sound Check under Settings --> Music
