Error: content relocation could not be completed

This has been asked before, including here, on reddit and elsewhere, but I can't find a solution anywhere. When I try to relocate my sound library (Logic Pro X > Sound Library > Relocate Sound Library) and choose my external hard drive, I have the error in the title of this post. I have tried formatting and partitioning the drive multiple times (it's currently formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and I'm not running Time Machine on it. I can move files in and out of the drive easily, and it has 1TB free (the drive is empty). My sound library is only a few gigabytes large.

Any ideas?

IF NONE OF THIS WORKS I FOUND A FIX:

For me it wasn't a problem with my hard drive. I used AppCleaner and deleted all the random Logic files buried in my Mac then restarted Logic and it worked fine. You could delete the whole app with AppCleaner then reinstall it but I didn't need to. I swear I was about to throw my laptop out a window, hope this helps someone.

I am literally having the exact same problem. I'm using an early 15 MacBook Pro with a Glyph 1TB SSD that is already Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted. I can move other files no problemo, but can't use this feature? I actually can't use Logic functionally if this isn't solved, and there aren't any solutions online from what I can gather. I just bought the DAW, SSD, and a bunch of mics, etc... I sure hope this isn't an issue :(

This did not work for me. After rebooting from Big Sur I found my drive with the instruments on it wouldn't automount. After a few reboots that stopped happening. I bought an SSD to replace my external HD and when I plugged it in and ran the Sound Mover it gives me this error. Tried the Full Disk Access thing but still no luck. Full reinstall of Logic and still it gives this error. Sure could use some ideas.

Thank you but I tried that after reading it on other blogs. I also tried different drives, reinstalling logic, resetting preferences, deleting sound library and reinstalling etc etc (All the things Apple suggested when I spoke to them) but no luck... apparently there is an actual problem that needs fixing according to Apple... so frustrating but thank you for your suggestions. Anything else I should try?

thanks so much but yes I tried that and no it didn't work. I also tried all permutations of unchecking and deleting. I also tried a full uninstall etc. and using various disks etc. and opening logic with various users but still no solution - and apple engineers are still "working on it" apparently... anyway find a fix please let me know!

wow thats so kind of you. i'd managed to sort it through the symlinks as you suggested by creating individual ones for each folder in the logic folder (it wouldn't let me create a "destination" symlink folder direct in application support for some permissions reason (wouldn't let me unlock that either). so it is definitely a workaround thank you so much and at least will be a good fix until apple sort out whatever the issue is. I'm currently trying the safe mode idea suggested above also at that sounds like it might be cleaner if it works - if not I'm definitely doing the symlinks as you suggeste thanks so much - REALLY appreciate all your help and patience.

I'm having the same problem, but without any success.

Macbook Pro 15" 2016

OS: 11.2 (Big Sur)

External Drives:

  • Samsung T5 USB 3.1 1TB, APFS (GUID Partition Map)
  • Iomega eGo Blackbelt 500 GB USB 2.0, APFS (GUID Partition Map)

I tried:

  • uninstalling/reinstalling logic
  • allowing Full Disk Access in Security and Privacy for Logic
  • using each of the APFS options
  • using each of the Mac OS Extended options
  • manually creating the symlink from Terminal

Nothing worked and now I'm wondering if this might be a Big Sur issue since I previously had success with Catalina
