Apple Watches that will pair with iPhone 6

From what I am reading I need a 6s or newer to pair with the Apple watch series 3 or 5. I only have an iPhone 6 and I am not interested in purchasing a new phone. I am not with a company that does upgrades so phones are out of pocket and mine works great. Will and older Apple watch work?

As mentioned, the Apple Watch must be running watchOS 5 or older

And make sure the previous owner has followed these instructions

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208855

or that you can get your money back, because we see a lot of post from people that have purchased 2nd hand Apple Watches that are locked and cannot be unlocked, except by the original owner (we suspect either owners that do not know what to do, or stolen goods).

Thanks for the info. I hope its ok to ask more questions. I was actually given a series 1 watch but my phone won't pair with it. The person that gave it to me had it paired with an iPhone X (from what I have been told). Can series 1 update past watch OS5? Just a reminder I have a iPhone 6. So I had not been doing regular updates on my phone. Two days ago, when I tried to pair it said I needed to update the phone so I did. I believe it was 12.4.6. Which was strange, because yesterday it updated to 12.4.7. After, I updated, now it says the watch needs to update when I try to pair. It is on the charger, WIFI on, and Bluetooth on. When I hit "update now" it immediately kicks me out and begins to unpair. If I don't push the prompt it kicks me out just the same. While it is kicking me out it quickly flashes the "your phone is out of date". I've also tried to skip the update but that hasn't worked either. Phone history. I bought it new but it did get wet last summer. Sometimes it headphones won't work and sometimes its the flashlight. As far as I know this is the only permanent damage. If something needs done on the watch, the lady that gave it to me can accommodate. I know this was a lot of detail. I really want this to work.
