Is it safe to unplug iPhone without ejecting first?

Is it safe to unplug iPhone from a Mac without ejecting first?

If it is OK, then why is there an eject icon for the iPhone in the Finder?

I know it's imperative to eject hard drives from the Mac before unplugging. It's confusing as to how the iPhone is different -- what might corrupt versus what's safe.

I thought that might be the case! In the past, people (with a lot of points in this community) said things like, "The iPhone does not need to be ejected, as it has no disk mode, and isn't in use on the computer unless iTunes is actively synchronizing it." (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1135624)

But that was 13 years ago, and I don't know if things have changed. And other people say you *do* need to eject the iPhone. This is why it's confusing.
