there is a quarter moon by my son's name when he texts me, how do I remove it? I don't hear his notifications

Open one of the messages sent by your son, then tap his name at the top of the message window. From there tap the “i” to see his info. Scroll to near the bottom of that screen and tap the “Hide Alerts” button to turn it off.
