Bootable USB for old MacBook Pro

Whew... I have an old MacBook Pro 4,1 running OS 10.6.8 that I'd like to erase the HD and install 10.11.6, the highest OS that will run on that machine - then this laptop is being given away.

My laptop is a MacBook Pro 11,2 running OS 10.13.6.

How, pray tell, do I create a bootable USB stick so I can install 10.11.6 on the 4,1? The various videos online that I viewed are... a tad unclear to this poor soul.

I feel like I'm getting closer... but still no cigar. Ugh. When I plugged in the following in the Terminal window, this is what I got:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/OSX --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app

Ready to start.

To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/OSX.

If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: y

Failed to start erase of disk due to error (-9999, 0).

A error occurred erasing the disk.

This was quite the process, but I did it. Not very scientific, but I think the issue was 10.6.8 and using that version of Disk Utility?

I updated the MacBook Pro with 10.11.6, THEN erased the USB stick, reformatted it. I ran the 10.11.6 Installer again so the Installer would be in the Applications folder, then ran Terminal to make the USB stick bootable. Whew. It worked. I was able to wipe the drive and install a clean version of 10.11.6.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
