iMac doesn't shut down

Hello all,

My iMac doesn't shut down correctly. The white timer displays on a black screen & turns indefinitely. Must reset the computer to shut down. But this is inconsistent: half the time, the computer does shut down normally. Safe boot has not fixed the problem. Any suggestions?

Didn't need to do a factory reset. Resetting NVAM/PRAM & SMC worked. Thanks anyway, TheEstimatingGroup!
