Malfunctioning Iphone 6plus

My phone is freezing and also writing gibberish messages and opening Apps on its own. The very patient and dedicated Apple Support rep did everything possible although it was impossible to restore it from scratch since the phone was not cooperating. We had to restore it from a backup. His advice is to buy a new phone.

The new SE is getting mixed reviews and my son is having problems with his. Stores are not open so I would have to order online so I can't try it out.

I think this is not an uncommon problem. Strangely, my ancient iPad is working fine with a much older version. I am making due with my computer and the iPad as backup.

Is Apple forcing us to update now?

Apple is not doing anything to force updating to anything. While the iPhone is quite an older device, it is 6 years old. For technology, that is really old. If you were unable to restore the device with Apple's help, then it would sound like there could be a hardware issue. If you don't wish to purchase an iPhone SE, there are other models. There are also refurbished phones available form Apple, depending on your location, https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished
