New Mac Mini, Razer X eGPU and Radeon RX580 GTS XXX edition = Black Screen

I am using the above equipment and have 4 monitors connected to the eGPU. From what I understand this is Apple approved equipment but when the computer wakes up or is powered on it does not wake the eGPU and I just have black screens. Once I get it working it's fine but each morning takes a lot of effort to get it to work. My "partial" work around is to connect one monitor directly to the Mac, I can at least boot up and have the one screen working but then it's a dance with the eGPU powering it on and off to get the other screens to work. Any advice how to resolve this issue?

Thanks!

Hello HRR,

I understand that when your Mac mini wakes up or powers on, it doesn't power the eGPU with it. In turn, this doesn't bring up all the corresponding monitors.

Did this behavior ever work correctly in its current configuration? If the issue began suddenly, then I would recommend resetting the NVRAM on your Mac mini and trying again. Also, verify that you are using the thunderbolt 3 cable that came with the eGPU for best results.

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

Use an external graphics processor with your Mac

Let me know if this helps.

Have a great day!

Hi, well. It seemed to be working today and then the screens abruptly shut down again. I had reset the NVRAM and I thought it might have made a difference but...

I take it the Nvram does reset even though I'm using an apple wireless keyboard? It did seem to take longer to reboot. I am using the thunderbolt cable that came with the eGPU. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. I'm trying to get hold of Apple support now too but they don't seem to be available.

Thanks!

An update -- things seem to have gotten worse. Once I get the monitors working (whether 3 to the Razer and one to the Mac or all 4 to the Razer) the monitors connected to the Razer are going blank after about 10 minutes. Often, within a few minutes, the Mac itself shuts off and reboots. I tried using an app I downloaded, Caffeine that keeps the computer from going to sleep. It made no difference.

Thanks,

Hal
