Missing applications after Catalina

With all the headlines over needing to update from 32-bit applications in Catalina, here is one bug being overlooked, especially by overly ambitious search engines, which have gone addle-brained since 2017.


Here is my issue:


Applications that suddenly go missing. In this case, the one application that would allow me to fix known Catalina issues: Terminal, has disappeared from my hard drive. This application was not only on my hard drive, in the Applications folder, but I had it in the dock. Now it is nowhere to be found on the hard drive. Just... gone.


No, I did not delete it.

It is still on my Mac with Catalina. I can access it from Spotlight Search. Also, just in case you haven't already tried the following, see below from Open or quit Terminal on Mac - Apple Support


Open Terminal

On your Mac, do one of the following:

  • Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, type Terminal in the search field, then click Terminal.
  • In the Finder , open the /Applications/Utilities folder, then double-click Terminal.

It is still on my Mac with Catalina. I can access it from Spotlight Search. Also, just in case you haven't already tried the following, see below from Open or quit Terminal on Mac - Apple Support

You do not make it clear what you updgraded from —I do see <iMac, OS X 10.11> in your byline—

I can say it never pays to get too far behind in the software or hardware, it only makes the upgrade process more suspect to shock & awe, and more importantly harder for seamless application transition without issue.

and to add— I keep Terminal on the Finder tool bar for easy access. You can drag and drop just about anything onto the Finder.

I must admit— I always have Terminal running. 100% on my main Desktop😉 Only in in the odd situation were the macOS closes it on me do I need to relaunch it.


On my main work screen it is stacked into the work flow...

Er, sorry to say that byline is out of date. My last OS was the previous to Catalina. Mojave.


While Iit is helpful to know I can add it to a finder window, I had thought that putting it in my dock would be and should have been sufficient for access with a swipe of the mouse/pointer. It takes more to open a finder window than to swipe to the dock (in my experience - some people prefer keyboard shortcuts).
