Object map is invalid, disk utility failed

I ran the disk utility rebooting it with command R -- it says it failed. How do I go about repairing it? I have drive genius and it says to reboot with a drive that I have to erase?

My computer seems to be working fine. I have an iMac 2014 running 10.14.6, 32gb memory, hard drive is almost full.

Thanks!

I am assuming that you tried using Disk Utility's First Aid option under Recovery Mode to try to check the integrity of your iMac's system drive, and the results is that it failed ... correct? If so, you may need to try it a few times to see if it comes back with the same results.

If it still continues to fail, the next step would be to boot up in Single User mode and try using fsck to repair the drive.

FYI. By "system" drive, I am referring to your Mac's boot-up HDD or SSD ... and that is what drive I have assumed you are referring to. Is that correct? ... or is this a different drive all together? (The title "Macintosh HD" leads me to believe this is your Mac's system drive.)

The following are typical causes for an exit code 8 error:

  • Incorrectly configured system settings.
  • A malware "infection."
  • A corrupt macOS file system or system directly on the boot up drive.
  • Outdated drivers.

If neither the Disk Utility nor fsck can repair this drive, your most likely are left with a few choices:

  1. Try a "more powerful" disk repair utility, or
  2. Completely erase and re-partition the drive, or
  3. Replace the drive.

You need at least 10-15% free storage on a HDD for you Mac to be able to function trouble free,;

SSD require even more free storage (20-25%) to be able to run efficiently and trouble free.

A almost full disk causes issues for any OS to maintain itself.

I will let you do the math, to get a sense of your predicament.

I would start there, do some house keeping.

I'm so sorry for the confusion and thanks for your patience. the problem is with the hard drive that is in my iMac - not an external drive, not the system itself. I don't seem to have any issues that i'm noticing but I had just used the utility program drive genius to remove malware and then ran disk utility in safe mode and it showed above. When I go back to drive genius - it's saying that it needs to boot from another hard drive to fix the problem - my concern is that it says that whatever drive that it says to choose -- it says it will erase the drive - so my question is if it's simple to just put in an empty drive to solve the problem -- if you are familiar with drive genius. Otherwise if I don't have that program, i'm not sure how else to solve the problem.
