with the one year free subscription to apple TV+, what is free? most movies ask for rent or buy! very confused!

Apple TV Plus is a service for Apple originals only. Currently there are 22 series and 4 movies, with more added each month. To see exactly what is included you would scroll down to "Available Apple TV Channels" and select the Apple TV Plus icon, which is the section you would have navigated to in order to claim the offer.
The TV app also contains content that is separate from that, such as movies from the iTunes store, which are done via rent or purchase, and other Apple TV Channel subscriptions.
