Downloads open in new window. Safari

I want my downloads from facebook, etc. to open in its own window, not replace the FB window in and using. How do I do that?

Hey there, Jim,

We're understanding the picture is opening in the same Safari tab you're already viewing when you try to download it to your computer.

Currently while using Safari, if you select Options > Download from the Facebook menu it will open the image in the same tab or window you have open. To prevent this, you can right-click (or control-click) and select to download the picture. This will place it in your Downloads folder (or whichever folder you have designated to receive downloads). From there you can open it in the app you want to view or edit it in.

If you still need more help with using Facebook, I'd suggest getting in touch with Facebook directly: Facebook Help Center.

If you have additional questions about how Safari processes downloads, you can get in touch with Apple Support here: Contact Apple Support.

Have a wonderful rest of your day!

Hi, Jim,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you have some questions on how web downloads work in Safari. I'm happy to help!

The information outlined in Download items from the web using Safari on Mac - Apple Support will detail how downloads work from the web in Safari.

If you're trying to open links, you can right-click or control-click and choose to open the link in a new tab or new window.

If this does not answer your question, don't hesitate to respond back. If you do, please include additional information about what's going on, such as:

  • Is this issue specific to Facebook, or does it occur on all sites?
  • Are you clicking a link to go to another page, or are you downloading items to your computer?

Best.

Nope. That is not what is happening on my MacBook. When I download a pic from FB, the tab I am on is immediately REPLACED with the downloaded file. i.e. the FB page which I was viewing is gone. This only began when I updated to the latest OS a few weeks back. Previously, all downloads would pop up in a new window where they could be saved, viewed, etc. and the original Safari window remained intact. That is what I want. I do not want to have to go back and reload FB every time I download something.

Hey there, Jim,

Thanks for following up with clarification on what you're wanting to do.

To get the picture into the app you want to view or edit it in, you will first need to download the picture to the computer. Using control- (or right-) click on the picture itself, then selecting the Download option from the pop up menu, should allow you to do that. Safari should then save the picture to your designated downloads folder. From there, you should be able to use the app you want to import the picture into to open the picture.

Cheers.
