Stocks widget stopped working mid May 2020

~3 days ago, the Mac Stocks widget stopped working. It says error retrieving chart, and also shows retrieving data at the bottom, but everything is blank. I tried taking out all but DOW J and NASD and no change. I am suspecting it has been abandoned (like so many others have been so far). Does anyone know, is this the case?

I sure wish they would leave the dashboard and widgets; I suspect they don't realize, or don't care, how many people really use and depend on them.

Actually, this whole issue could be an artifact. I just did restart my machine, and it went through some odd phases. After finally getting back up, the Stocks widget is now working normally again. So must have been some corruption.

The "odd phases":

  • boot up very slow; my assumption is that the machine decided to run an fsck, which causes a very slow boot up
  • instead of starting normally, the apple logo was displayed in a red box, and the progress bar in the "yet to be completed" section was green. I searched for this and apparently it is a known situation, but without a good explanation that I could find. I did however find a picture of a computer with this situation.
  • after that, instead of completing the restart, it just locked up
  • I had to force shutdown via power switch
  • Next restart was normal, and Stocks widget is now working again.

Go figure.

Thank you. I had not heard the term "Sherlocked", but read the link you sent, and now I understand. I already understood about Dashboard disappearing in Catalina; one of the reasons, but certainly not the most important reasons, we are holding off on Catalina for the moment. I sure haven't seen anything remotely comparable though, to widgets in Dashboard, and really wish they would bring it back . . . I know I'm not alone. Oh well. Apple used to give a hoot about what customers wanted, ah heck, and they used to care not to release horribly buggy software . . . and I certainly know I'm not alone in that (factual) thinking, either.

Thank you for your post; at least I know yet another widget bites the dust.
