Purchasing an unregistered new iphone 8 from facebook marketplace

Hi

I found an iphone 8 that is advertised to be brand new and sealed on facebook market place. The seller states that there is a full apple warranty on it.

He sent a screenshot of the serial number being checked on the checkcoverage.apple.com website. It states: Please activate your device. We're unable to display coverage details because your device hasn't been registered. Please contact your Apple product retailer or your wireless carrier to register this device ... Note: Warranty service does not depend on registering your device.

I am just wondering if an unregistered phone means it has never been used before, and if I take it to an Apple store, can I get it activated with full warranty?

What does it mean by warranty service does not depend on registering the device? Does this mean there is a chance that the phone's warranty is expired?

He will give me IMEI number/serial number when I take a look at the phone in person.

Thanks

iPhone 8

Apple’s product warranties always start on the day of original retail sale by Apple or by one of their Authorized sellers. That date starts the one year default warranty, and it starts the 60 day count down for AppleCare+ eligibility.

”Unregistered” means nothing. Apple doesn’t have any sort of “registration” of devices. The seller may have meant it was never taken out of the box and activated, but there is no way for you to verify that even if that’s what they meant. But whether it was activated or not, the warranty period started on the day it was first sold new at retail.
