Apple watch battery dying very quickly

Since I did the latest software update on my Apple Watch the battery has started dying very quickly. I can't get through half a day without having to charge my watch. Is this a software issue? I have checked the settings in the watch app and turned off background app refresh for almost all of my apps. I'm not sure what else I can do, doesn't make sense to have a watch that doesn't even last a day.

Having the same issue here with a very new iphone 11 and very new apple watch series 5. I've tried tinkering a bit with background app refresh (turned all off) but still nothing... Apple, please advise.

I've had similar problems. After updating OS on my Apple Watch and MacBook Pro, the watch battery drains ridiculously fast. I am now having to charge the watch at least two times/day, usually three. Rather pointless to have a watch if one cannot actually use it.

I've reset the watch, unpaired and paired the watch to the iPhone (with an updated iOS) multiple times. No improvement.

Same. I was charging for about an hour each morning while eating breakfast and that would last me until next morning. watchOS 7 was definitely the culprit and now I have to charge at least twice per day. I have been running nothing in the background to see how long it would last and that had no impact. Serious drainage since the upgrade.

I opened a chat with support, was escalated to dedicated watch rep, he recommended that I un-pair the watch from iPhone, then re-pair and monitor for 24 hours. I did that last night after getting both devices charged up above 50%, and my watch behaved MUCH better today. Will keep monitoring...

In case it returns, Apple has finally published this support document that fixes some of these problems: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211865

Do note that restoring your iPhone and Apple Watch can result in some missing data, such as missing Watch data from the time that WatchOS 7 / iOS 14 was installed until now. And maybe missing apps that are no longer in the App Store. Also if you are connected to your work, you may need to link it back up to your work servers. And Apply Pay and Face/Touch ID will need to be setup anew (both were easy for me). It also resets your contact tracing database.

I think that unpairing/pairing helped with my series 4 battery drain, but now it won’t unlock my iMac - that little box just won’t check! Tried rebooting, signing out with my Apple ID and back in, and all of the voodoo “fixes” I could find on the internet. Finally called Apple - it’s a known issue, they’ve had other reports.

An update:

I tried all of the recommended fixes suggested by Apple Support, Chat dialogue with an Apple Support rep, and in this forum: Unpairing/pairing, diagnostics, etc. No improvement. I submitted a repair request and sent my watch to Apple for repair. It was returned less than 24 hours after receipt by Apple (based on text and email notifications), with no repair. Since my battery is currently ‘functioning at 80%,’ Apple will not even look further and make any necessary repairs. I received the watch back with no improvement.

I’ve since upgraded to new iPhone and MacBook Pro, and I’ve paired my watch to my new iPhone. All OS upgrades have been conducted, and still, my watch charge drains in fewer than 7 hours. (Charge does last somewhat longer if I am not in proximity to my laptop and iPad, but still it does not make it through one full business day...)

This is completely unacceptable. A timepiece that needs to be charged/plugged in for the majority of the day is not a watch. It is a clock!!

Apple needs to acknowledge the problem and take immediate steps to make the fix available to current, loyal consumers.

I had the same excessive draining of my Series 5 watch. After trying all the Apple recommended "solutions" without success, I found what appears to be at least a partial solution. I turned off "HandWashing" and my watch now keeps its charge close to my previous performance. I still see about a 5% - 10% increase in the amount it drains. I am guessing that there are further issues with the Watch OS7 release. Hope this helps.
