External camera laggy - low frame rate

OK, despite my post above, I've tried out zoom when speaking with colleagues this morning; it's still dropping frames but the lag is not nearly as impacting and is actually usable with the eGPU connected, but obviously still not great.

Apple have completely removed the LG 5K monitor from all their stores, even surplus stock is no longer available.

Unfortunately I think it’s safe to assume they won’t be investing any effort into fixing compatibility of the new models with the internal USB bus and peripherals on those monitors if they haven’t already.

Updated to 10.15.7 and no change here. Still super laggy with the LG camera. External camera (I bought a Fuji SLR) works wonderfully, even hooked up directly to my LG USB port (not straight to Macbook).

Wondering if anyone here has heard of problems with the laggy/low frame rate on the 10th-gen Intel chips in the mid-2020 MacBook Air with Magic Keyboard models? Or is this something limited to the 10th-gen Intel silicon in the 4-TB mid-2020 MacBook Pro "Iris Plus" graphics?

I've been watching this thread with interest hoping for a fix and don't think one's coming, unfortunately, and looking to get some life out of my 5K's while I can.

I have two of the first-get 5K's pre-revision (thankfully no wifi issues) that have been a little spotty but otherwise good for my late-2016 4-TB, mid-2017 4-TB, mid-2018 4-TB, and then mid-2019 2-TB quad core, but it looks like the 2020/10th Gen Intel silicon has finally broken it

I can gift my 5K's to two fortunate cousins who started college/uni earlier this year with new 2020 MBA's and could use the killer 1-cable clamshell-mode docking station that these monitors have been for me at home and office since 2016, but I don't want to ship them lemons.

Anyone have confirmation - positive or negative, either way - on how well the 5K Ultrafines work with the 2020 MBA's that have 10th Gen Intel silicon?

Seeing Sean's comment above, I am reminded that my LG Ultrafine 5K got zapped during a recent power surge - even though we have a surge protector. It killed my monitor but LG fixed it for $100 (it was purchased in June 2017). During the period when the monitor was being repaired, I upgraded to an M1 MBP - quite independent from the monitor issue. The newly repaired LG monitor works fine on the M1 but it's possible it would be working fine on an Intel, as Sean mentioned.

Reading all the comments there's something that strikes me...

I habe both a MBP 16" from February 2020 as well as a M1 MBP 13" from January 2021.

Both have the same problem with the monitor. No difference. They regularly lose connectivity.

Neither Apple nor LG seems to be either willing to find a solution of even worst, able to find a solution.

This obviously is fixed with the second generation of the screen so LG could just swap them, but they don't.

Yep. Navigating LG's support is not something I'm looking forward to, but alas. Worth noting that Apple also claims compatibility on the LG Ultrafine's product page on store.apple.com.

I have noticed I've had WAYYY more issues just connecting to my USB keyboard (which hooks through my monitor's USB) since moving to the 2020 Macbook Pro.

LG camera lag is still an issue on 2020 MacBook Pro running 10.15.7

Has anyone tried the MacOS 11 Big Sur beta to see if it perhaps includes a fix?

So you have a M1 MacBook? The LG camera was completely unusable on my 2019 MBP and I have a 2020 MBP-M1 on order. But I have also purchased a Logitech webcam that works perfectly.

So Apple Support just called me back on this issue and said it is a known issue and they are working on a fix. We'll see. Unfortunately, in the meantime, we have to live with the issue.

Thanks to the OP for taking the time to do all that troubleshooting! I'm having the same issue, and I'm glad to not have to go through all that 😉

I'll also note that I'm seeing the same issue in a variety of programs that use the camera; Zoom, FaceTime, Hand Mirror, Slack, Google Meet. All the same, extremely low framerate and really laggy. Completely unusable.
