Why are some of the photos on my iphone suddenly low res?

Why have some of the photos on my iphone suddenly become low resolution? Just a few random ones, and they were fine before. Can they be restored?

Admittedly I do have a lot of photos on my phone, which is why I decided to start saving on the cloud. But it seems that in the process of moving them to the cloud, some of the photos have not made it...about 18 months worth of photos are missing. And sadly it is some of these photos that have now become low res on my phone. I'm really sad as they are photos of my kids. I miss regular cameras! Thanks

It is possible that you selected the "Optimize iPhone Storage" option when setting up photos in iCloud. This temporarily stores a low res version of a picture on your phone, but uploads the full res version to iCloud. This most likely only started happening just recently because your iPhone is running low on storage. You can turn this off by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and selecting "Download and Keep Originals."
