Apple music and local mp3 files

Hello everyone.

I just noticed that with my Apple Music, it has all my music files and Apple music files (of course) in the cloud in my library. What it used to be is a mix of local based files and apple music files carried into my itunes library. So in other words Apple music would make two files when importing my local mp3 files into itunes. What I mean by this is, it would take my local m3ps files and still store it locally where i can play from the file on my imac in itunes but it would also make a cloud based file so i can play it on the cloud with my different devices eg. my phone.

I also noticed that through this process Apple Music has seemed to have erased all my local files now that they are all in the cloud. Thankfully i saved these files on my external hard drive.

My question to you guys is that, is this a new thing that Apple music is doing when you start the process with turning Apple Music on?

I, like you, started Apple Music with a big library in iTunes of my collection (probably around 60K tracks). Over the years I have replaced the albums in my library (after making a backup of everything) with versions in Apple Music. But when I did that I would then delete the versions I had on the hard drive, but Apple Music did not delete the existing files by itself - it asked if I wanted to delete the files or keep them. There were "issues" early on with Apple Music and specifically iCloud Music Library with people claiming that files on their hard drives were deleted by Apple Music, but I have never seen that.
