How do I set a duration time for an event? For example, turn off a light automatically after 30 minutes from being turned on

I don’t believe you can do that by asking. You can set automations to do it.
Yes -Automations allows you to set a duration after automatically turning on the lights. But there doesn't seem to be a way to set a duration after manually turning the lights on.
What lights are you using?
Philips Hue has timers using their App. Here’s how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIYme5SuNv0
Your lights might have an app as well
Thank you. That was the scenario I was looking for. My actual application is a small water pump. It would be ideal to be able to monitor the state of the device and turn off after a set time or other condition. It appears that this isn't possible now but it would be a nice energy saving capability to have via HomeKit or other App
I use this plug-in (manual) timer to turn the iron off after 30 mInutes:
At $9.99 it is a cheap option!
Thanks I've tried to do this with Siri Short Cuts but the Wait function only seems to work for very limited durations. Have others already solved this?
See if there’s a mobile App for your pump, several of them do.
Thank you, it's not a fix for my set-up but I appreciate the link. I can use these plugs for other applications
