Asking for username and password and hold for authentication message when printing

I am prompted to this when I try to print from any Apple device (MacBook Pro, IPads, and IPhones) however it works fine with my DELL lap top which is running Windows 7. It was working fine until I moved and connect to a new wi-fi. I almost tried everything, delete the printer and reinstall it, reset the printer, tried combinations of username and passwords, but nothing happened. This applies for the wi-fi print, direct print, and even USB connection. Only e-print is working via the email.

How can I get rid of this on all my Apple devices.

I tried with HP support but got nothing.

The printer is HP DeskJet 2600 All in one

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.15

Hey akmal23,

Thanks for going through those steps and providing that info. If the issue is still occurring in a new user account and safe mode, you can reinstall macOS using the steps from the following link. While this should retain your user settings and files, it’s always a good idea to make a backup before doing this:

Reinstall macOS

Test again after this and see if this has any impact on the issue.

Take care.

Hey becky_s22

Thanks for your advice, but nothing is working even with the password listed on the key chain I still can't figure out what is the user name. I tried most of the combinations. For the other notes; there is no other user account on my Mac and the problem exists on the safe mode.

The drive is updated because I am using HP smart application and it is updated.

I am still trying with the HP support, but can't get any useful help.

Appreciate your support and I will post any updates to help others.

It is endless. I tried everything but still the same, I can't figure out the username / password configuration. I think the issue is related to HP software, the device is working very well as a scanner and for the e-print but the direct print and wireless still have the same issue on all my apple devices. Today I tried to reset the printer and remove it from all the devices then I used a different MacBook Air which was not connected to this printer or to the network before, the result was the same: asking for username and password.

Finally it's over. Now I can print after restoring the factory defaults, this can't be done from the printer (like what is on You Tube). It should be done from the application (HP Smart).

Connect your device and the printer to the same network.

  • open application on your device and insure the printer is connected and ready
  • choose settings (rectangle at the bottom right corner.
  • from the menu on the left choose advanced settings under settings.
  • from the tool bars on the top again choose settings, a new page will open.
  • choose restore defaults.
  • then restore factory defaults.
  • follow the on screen instructions.

This will restore everything to the factory settings, install the printer normally and enjoy printing.

if you are using the web services e-print; the printer now has a new email address

Hey there akmal23,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re being prompted for a password from all your Apple devices anytime you attempt to print from them. It sounds like you’ve done some good troubleshooting for this so far and I’ll be happy to help with this.

Do you use iCloud Keychain? If so, open Keychain Access on your Mac and update the login and password for your printer and see if this has any impact on the issue. These links can help with this step:

If the issue continues after this, see if this occurs from a new user account on your Mac:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If the issue doesn't happen in the new user account, the issue is related to the settings or files in your own account and other devices. If the issue happens in the other user account:

That dialog is being issued by Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) the underlying print spooler inside MacOS.

It is unusual to see it, unless you have made changes lately. If you have, try this "recipe" from a school network in California, because it clearly articulates the steps you likely need to follow.

when printing again later, your username and password should be all that is needed.
