How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

  • Other: Non-removable mobile assets, like Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries, non-removable logs and caches, Spotlight index, and system data, such as Keychain and CloudKit Database. Cached files can't be deleted by the system.
  • System: Space taken by the operating system. This can vary based on your device and model.

About cached files in "Other"

Finder and iTunes categorize cached music, videos, and photos as Other instead of actual songs, videos, or photos. Cached files are created when you stream or view content like music, videos, and photos. When you stream music or video, that content is stored as cached files on your device so you can quickly access it again.

Your device automatically removes cached files and temporary files when your device needs more space.

If storage on your device differs from what you see in Finder or iTunes

Since Finder and iTunes categorize cached files as Other, reported usage for Music or Videos might differ. To view usage on your device, go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage.

If you want to delete the cached files from your device

Your device automatically deletes cached files and temporary files when it needs more space. You don't need to delete them yourself.

As per the original reply this should not cause a problem as caches are self-managing.

If the Other is real data but just not in any specific category you will have to look at what apps may be storing it and get rid of history.

EG do we really need 2 years of WhatsApp messages and images?

IIf it were mine I would not restore but build up from scratch adding apps as I need them.

I have a burst photo in Recently Deleted that refuses to clear and holds up all my other clearing. Eventually I will have to resort to a major cleanup by rebuilding.

Yes, Data should be tied to an app, but more apps, especially News apps it would appear, seem to go wild on the other storage. If app developers somehow overcome this design principle then the iOS may not be able to clear it

Other is not a category - it is data that doesn't have a category recognised by iOS so not always managed easily.

Sounds like it IS possible. I'm struggling to get my Other storage category to drop below 18gb. I stopped off all my apps. Went through a back up and restore, like other sites suggested, but it's still there.

Apple should add a "nuke Other" option for people like us. You can add all the warnings you like.

This issue is stopping me accessing some apps because "low storage" and there's nothing i can do. So frustrating. Plenty of other people are asking the same questing around the net.

Sorry. Typing on my phone. I meant i had stripped all my apps off the phone and it didn't reduce the Other storage.

I might do a factory reset, as you suggest, but that seems extreme to solve an issue that is supposed to be auto managed.

As more and more apps stream content and create caches, it would seem like this problem should be dealt with better at source. Perhaps locating each cache within the specific app storage label would help identify where the problem is coming from. Right now, i have no guarantee that this problem won't just recur next week. At least if the data was tied to an app, I'd know not to use that app and complain.
