iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

Sadly the issue has come back for me as well. I had managed to sort it out by simply disconnecting and reconnecting Bluetooth, as someone had suggested (and as I had re-suggested to others, however to no avail), and it had been working even with the upgrade to iOS 14.0.

That said, I was also hit by the Fitness bug and had to restore everything. Now I get the same message as before: can't do that (i.e. get directions via Waze) while driving.

They absolutely lied about the whole it's the manufacturer claim!!!! In their almighty list they list my car to have carplay and it doesn't it has SYNC. I went up the chain all the way to the engineers, who places blue tooth and Siri logging tracers on my phone. I sent my phone to Apple to study because they told me, this was a KNOWN issue that they had no idea where it is coming from or how to fix it. They gave me a new phone which updates to 14 and has the issue. My husband never did the 13.5 update has the same phone and his works FINE with my car. On our next upgrade we are dumping our iphones and I HATE that but Apple has an update every time you turn around and they have become a nuisance with some of the features they have enabled or disabled. I am going to slowly give up.

Do not disturb is definitely set to "Manually". I've even toggled it between the other settings of "Automatically" and "When Connected to Car Bluetooth" a few times just to make sure it wasn't stuck in in some odd state somehow. As I mentioned before, this wasn't an issue until the iOS 13.5 update, so my guess is that something is broken in this update or this is by design. If it's by design, it's a bad design. :)

I'm sorry, I meant to say "if Do Not Disturb is not turned on". You are not using CarPlay are you? When you say that a car icon appears on the screen, is this the iPhone screen, and can you post a screenshot of that? I will check my car in the morning, it is too late to do tonight and see if I see this same behavior, but I don't generally try to open any apps while I'm driving anyway. But my wife is off work tomorrow and we can test it to see if this appears to be a bug. I have an iPhone 11 Pro with iOS 13.5.

Okay, I had a chance to go out in the car this afternoon and test this. While I don't use Spotify, I was able to get Siri to open Maps, Safari, Waze, and my Music player. I never received that image you showed, and I was using an iPhone 11 Pro, with iOS 13.5, connected to Bluetooth in my 2015 Mercedes-Benz. I do not have CarPlay. For once, unfortunately, I did not get any text messages, so I couldn't test that, but I generally let the car read text messages for me. That is included in my radio setup. I don't know what to say at this point except to check your vehicle manufacturer, and maybe you and the other poster could compare vehicles.

Thank you HatterMT! I agree 100 percent with you. Whether it works fine for other people is not relevant; the issue is that Feature/issue is happening for multiple people as a directly after upgrading.

There are plenty of times when developers work on a piece of software and it works fine for them, but when it gets pushed to quality assurance, QA can see a bug that the developer can’t. The usual developer response is, it works fine for me, but when pushed further, a root cause is found.

it is also not uncommon in the software industry , where software companies will test a patch and it works fine on their end, then release it, will have users that will find new bugs that they didn’t catch in their test scenarios.

The is fact that other people are experiencing this problem, and the common denominator is the upgrade from the previous software to iOS 13.5 it’s something that Apple needs to investigate further on their end.

The OP did not say they were experiencing problems with phone calls. What model of iPhone do you have? Are you using CarPlay in your vehicle, or just Bluetooth? Also, what model of car are you using? I'm curious at the few number of people reporting this since this would be a major issue with Bluetooth devices. I just cannot seem to duplicate it, and no one else has come here to say they don't have the problem. I wish I could get it to do what you are reporting, but I can't. Have you tried contacting Apple Support for any assistance.

I am also experiencing this issue since updating to iOS 13.5. Nothing else changed with my settings or my vehicle. DND While Driving was always off and remains off, and previously I was able to open apps like Waze, TuneIn, etc. while driving without looking at or touching my phone. Now Siri won’t let me.

So far I have tried the following (with low expectations): restarted my phone, toggled DND While Driving through the different settings and back, and updated to 13.5.1. There was no change and the bug persists.

This really makes the device frustrating in the car and causes unnecessary distraction. I hope that a resolution is found ASAP. I will be submitting a support ticket as well.

I’m having the exact same issue after updating to 13.5. Siri only accepts nav or place a call. I can’t ask anything else like open apps or search something on the web. Siri responds that he can’t do that while driving. Also a car icon is visible in the Siri screen. What’s the point of a assistent if I can’t use it while driving? This way people are going to grab their phone...please solve asap!

I am having same problem since iOS 13.5 and continues in 13.5.1. I connect via Bluetooth. I have a iPhone XR. I own a 2019F ORD ESCAPE. Wont open Waze, won't answer a question I ask it(because it cant search the web), it won't open anything but Apple installed apps from what I can see. All I get is a clip-art of a car on the screen and Siri tell me she cant do that because I'm in the car???!!! Very frustrating !!! VERY NON-HANDS FREE. Does Apple really want us to stop paying attention to the road while we are driving??

Update 13.5.2 PLEASE!!!
