If I plug a USB-C cable into a wall outlet with a USB connector, would that work to safely charge and power my 2019 MacBook?

I am on a trip and have left my power supply at home. If I plug a USB-C cable into a wall outlet with a USB connector, would that work to safely charge and power my MacBook?

Safe, but not effective.

That wall outlet is likely ready, willing and able to supply 0.5 Amp at 5 Volts. Thats Volts * Amps yields Watts, or 2.5W. That's enough to charge your phone, but far short of what is needed to charge or run a MacBook Pro.

Your MacBook Pro 15 or 16 -in is looking for 87 to 96 watts, your 13-in for about 60 Watts. And it would like about 20 Volts to charge quickly or run, and that requires a negotiation, so the powering device has to be "smart".

Hello rdhk16gt,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with charging your Mac. Without knowing the power rating for the adaptors and cables you are trying to use it's hard to say for sure.

Thankfully, you can check the requirements for powering your Mac and the different options using this help article: Find the right power adapter and cable for your Mac notebook - Apple Support

Cheers.

The other bit of information that may be helpful is that a power adapter LARGER than the exact match may be used with impunity. The computer just draws what it wants. It damages nothing.

So if you have an assortment of devices at home and want to obtain an additional power adapter, there is no penalty for buying the one for the top-of-the-line large MacBook Pro, and using it whenever you wish on anything, even the smallest MacBook Air.
