USB-C Adapter

Is it necessary to charge my MacBook (15" 2017) with a USB-C adapter if my power strip has a USB-C port?

Almost certainly yes.

In fact, it depends on the output of the USB port on the power strip, and if that USB port is USB-PD compliant. Your Mac came with an 87 W charger, and most power strips put out only 15 W which is far less than your Mac needs. A power strip USB port is generally intended for a smartphone or a tablet, not a computer.
