When I export video files from Photos I lose the creation date (it becomes exported date) under Finder and also in Lightroom for example
The correct creation date is visible when I import to iMovie and Final Cut Pro so the correct date is in the file somewhere.
Can anyone help?
Is this a ploy to only use Apple software for editing and managing workflow??

Yes indeed, iMovie and FCP work just fine with the creation date intact... but other software does not, for example Lightroom Classic (a competitor program from Adobe) which I am trying to use in my workflow to manage my media files.
I used to use Aperture but it was unfortunately discontinued so I needed to find a replacement product that suited my needs, Photos does not.
iMovie importing media with its creation date isn't a plus, its a basic necessity that should be assumed. Finder not having the correct creation date is quite strange. Finder does not always display the correct creation date either for photos but its not as much of an issue as It can be bypassed either in Lightroom or by other software to correct it. Not that it should have to be.
My suggestion of a "ploy" was just that it seems odd that the creation date remains intact for apple software products but does not for competitor, similar products.
Anyways, your reply is much appreciated, and I hope to see more that can help me solve this issue. Having tried to research the problem it seems I am not the only one facing it and has been an issue for many years

You are right. There have been several posts here that have had creation date carry-over issues in various contexts.
I just did a test by exporting a video file from the Photos app to the desktop. The creation date carried over. The procedure I followed was to do a File/Export/Unmodified Original from within the Photos app, and checked checked the box "Export IPTC as XMP". However, I got the same result when I dragged the video out of the Photos library to the desktop. I can't speak for what happens when exporting to Light Room or other app. I am using Photos 4 with Mojave.
I assume that other apps to which one might export would have some procedure to correct or modify the creation date.

iMovie imports media with the creation date. That's a plus. The Finder apparently does not. So think of the glass as half full instead of worrying about a non-existent "ploy". You can choose to use whatever software you want. Note that I am not an Apple employee, but just a user of iMovie like you are.
