Exercise minutes do not add up to workout done

Went out for a walk this morning. Completed 5km in about 50 minutes. Elevation was 50 meters. So it was a brisk walk. When I finished the workout I was only credited with 18 minutes exercise minutes. During that time I did not stop.


I have already reset the watch and done the calibrations. I have checked all the settings on my phone and watch.

Why am I not getting my full exercise minutes????

Probably because you're not walking fast enough;

To earn 1 minute of exercise credit(green ring);

Walk a full minute at a brisk walking pace(3.3 mph approx) or above.

Raise your heart rate to approx 75% of your maximum.

When you're at around or above this heart rate for the entire minute you'll receive 1 exercise minute credit.

If you pause or slow down then you won't get any exercise credit.

Update: I downloaded the Nike Run Club app and synced it with Health, Activity and any other apps it suggested and added the app to my Apple Watch dock. I used it this morning and it is awesome! The actual minutes walked show in the Activity app accurately. I will be using this app to walk from now on instead of using the Activity app. I would suggest giving it a try!

I am having the same issue with inaccurate minutes. My daughter and I walked together, 2.25 miles. When done, both watches (hers and mine) read 45 minutes but when I look at the overall minutes, it only reads 24/30 minutes. I noticed the other day too when I was on the treadmill. Walked 52 minutes and only registered less than 30 minutes. This was not happening before.

The EXACT same thing happens with my watch. I have two daughters. We walk the same pace and they get credit for 1/2 hour. I get credit for 7 minutes. One is a runner and I know her heart rate is more fit than mine. They are so sick of hearing me complain that for mother's day they got me a new watch (thinking that it was my series 1 that was the issue). I am ready to abandon my apple watch and get a fitbit... there is a problem with apple and it isn't being addressed.

75 % of my maximum heart rate? Really? I'm not so sure about that. Yesterday I took a brisk walk for 33 minutes and got credit for 15 minutes. Today I took the same walk with the dog, stoping and starting and my heart rate was lower. I got credit for 28 minutes. The formula for exercise when walking is just wrong. I have stopped caring about tracking my activity level. I am considering a fitbit for that. Apple has just failed.

I agree! So glad to see I’m not the only one experiencing this, Apple Watch is failing on this. For example, for any yoga session I log, I get full exercise credit for every minute, regardless of what my average heart rate is, but when I go out for a bike ride that has me at a higher average heart rate, I’m lucky if my watch records any exercise minutes. C’mon Apple, you can do better!

Maximum heart rate is not a setting to be entered anywhere,it is the maximum heartbeats per minute,when you're exercising.

You can calculate your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. For example, if you're 45 years old, subtract 45 from 220 to get a maximum heart rate of 175. This is the average maximum number of times your heart should beat per minute during exercise.
