I run the latest version of Catalina on a 2018 15-inch MBP, with 16GB of memory.I've recently had two warnings that I've run out of application memory - my application profile is unchanged and I had no similar issues with previous Macs with max of 8GB emory. Any ideas?

I think some of your applications or deamons haven't released memory space when they were quit.
If you haven't rebooted your MacBook Pro for a while, rebooting the system resolve it.
I am also getting this message, even though I have 16GB of RAM and about 250GB free on my boot drive. I'm not doing anything unusual - browser, Excel, Word, Mail, some misc stuff.
Running Mojave.
Is there any way to fix this without rebooting?
